Questions?

Is there any way I can injure the skin?

Yes, by using hot water or harsh soaps during bathing. Also, excess rubbing will damage the skin. Pulling a person across a sheet and not having the person turn or reposition regularly will increase risk of a pressure ulcer. Not changing linens or clothing that become wet from sweat, urine or liquid stool will keep the skin moist and at risk for damage.

Where do pressure ulcers usually form?

Over bony areas of the body, like the hips, heels, shoulder blades, back of head, ears and tailbone.

How often should a person move around so as not to get a pressure ulcer?

Moving and positioning a person properly prevents skin injury. See our Future Lesson On Positioning in Bed. A bed-bound person should turn and change positions at least every two hours. Chair bound persons should be helped to change positions every hour. If a person is chair bound but able to shift weight, have them do so every 15 minutes.

Can I massage the skin when it turns red?

No. It has been shown that if you rub over a reddened area, you might damage the skin. You can apply lotion to the skin, but do not rub or massage reddened areas. Rub lightly until the lotion absorbs into the skin.

How long does it take for a pressure ulcer to heal?

Most stage I and stage II pressure sores will heal within 60 days with proper treatment. Stage III and IV pressure sores can take months or even years to heal, or may not heal at all.  Prevention is the best practice but if a pressure sore develops, healing is a slow process. Even though healing is slow, continued care and treatment can prevent complications such as further tissue damage, infection, and pain.
