Surgery  >  Care of Stitches (Sutures)

Safety Tips

  • Always wash your hands thoroughly for 15 seconds or use a hand disinfectant before and after you look at or care for a wound.
  • Do not let the person who has stitches do any heavy lifting, as this can cause sutures to separate and the wound to tear open.
  • Do not let the person twist or bear down, putting strain on the sutures and wound. The doctor will give directions on what activities to avoid and for how long.
  • If the person you provide care for is allergic to Latex, wear latex free disposable gloves when you give suture care.
  • Caution - Do not apply heat to a wound or suture line (unless ordered by the doctor).
