Moving Safely  >  Correct Use of Canes

Questions?

What can I do to make sure a person does not fall when using a cane?

Try these tips for making the home safer:

  • Remove all throw rugs, electrical cords and unnecessary objects (e.g. children’s toys, pet toys) out of the common walking pathways in the home.
  • Clean up spills on the floor immediately to prevent slipping.
  • Keep thresholds between rooms flat and smooth, not raised.
  • Always keep any items that you need close at hand to avoid reaching or repeatedly having to stand.
  • Rearrange furniture to provide open space through hallways and major rooms.
  • Have the person use a small backpack, fanny pack or purse to help carry things around.
  • In the bathroom use non-slip mats, grab bars, a raised toilet seat, and a shower tub seat.

What if the tip of a cane cracks or becomes worn?

Change the tip. You should change tips routinely every 5 years or more often depending on a person’s use.

How do I know if the person is putting too much weight on their weak or injured leg?

Check with the doctor or physical therapist. The proper weight bearing will be ordered to protect the person from injury.
